The Paths to Residency in Mexico
Mexico’s Immigration Law has modernized the process for foreigners seeking to live in the country. Three main categories were established, designed to adapt to different purposes of stay. The right choice depends on your personal goals and situation.
1. Temporary Residence
This is the most common option for those who want to establish themselves in Mexico for a limited time, whether for work, study, or family reasons. Temporary Residence allows you to live in the country for a period of up to four years and is the step before obtaining Permanent Residence. It's ideal if you are:
- A professional with a job offer in Mexico.
- A student.
- A family member of a temporary resident or a Mexican national.
- Someone with financial solvency to live in the country.
2. Permanent Residence
ermanent Residence allows you to live in Mexico indefinitely and, unlike the temporary status, authorizes you to engage in profitable activities without restrictions. You can obtain it if you:
- Have maintained your Temporary Resident status for a period of four years.
- Have direct family ties with a Mexican citizen or a permanent resident
- Are a retiree or investor who meets certain requirements.
- Have excelled in areas such as science, sports, or culture.
Visitor with permission to carry out paid activities
This residence permit authorizes a foreigner to remain in national territory for a period of 180 days (or 6 months) and engage in paid work during that time. One of the following requirements is required:
- By Residence: If you have lived in Mexico with Temporary or Permanent Resident status for the time required by law.
- By Marriage: If you are married to a Mexican citizen.
- By Descent: If you have children or parents of Mexican nationality.
